Equitable Digital Accessibility in the Classroom

How do you ensure equitable digital access in your classroom??

Technology offers the potential to improve education for everyone. Technology has proven particularly effective for meeting the needs of students. With this rise in technology, teachers are being asked to incorporate more and more into their daily class schedule. The best way to make sure all classes have equitable time to use the technology is by use of an online calendar. There are many websites to help with ways to help students have access to computers.  With these types of technologies it is best to have a calendar for teachers to sign up to use in their class to help with all kids getting a chance to use the internet. There are always ways to make sure that students get an equal chance to do work in school if they do not have the opportunity at home. An additional area of concern is the use of adaptive or assistive technologies. Adaptive and assistive technologies include technology that is used to support students with specific challenges. Similar technologies may also be used to assist students who struggle English as a second language. There are always ways to make sure that people have internet. Technology is expanding at an increasing rate and it is changing the world as we know it. As our society advances the need for newer technology grows daily. The ultimate goal is to make sure students in K-12 are equipped for life beyond high school and in order to do so, equitable digital access is crucial. For years, equity of access in education has referred to the ability of all students to receive an education from qualified teachers in buildings that are safe and conducive to learning in a district with sufficient resources that are reasonably equal among other schools in the same state. Technology has added another dimension to the equation, as it opens up a much wider and greater amount of resources and information. Equity of access now includes access to use digital content and connect to fellow students, educators and experts throughout the world. It also means sufficient high-speed broadband to the district, the school building, the classroom and the home.
